Video Analysis ~

To understand the difference between how numerous genres trailers run through and presented, I would have to analyse a few trailers. I will be print screening at interesting points and analysing those shots. By doing this I can see the types of impact that are being made during the trailer.
By analysing trailers we can then see the different types of impact, editing and codes and conventions used. Also any ideas or things that we find interesting in some trailers we could most probably apply to our one that we plan to create in the future.
I am first going to extinguish the difference between Teaser Trailers and Trailers.
I plan to analyse 1 Film Trailers and 1 Teaser Trailers.
I will be thoroughly analysing them in to great detail.

What is a Film Trailer?...
A Film trailer is a film advertisement for feature films that we will soon be displayed in cinemas.
Film Trailers are always shown before a film, this is to show any future audiences or fans that this is soon to be released. Film Trailers in average are around 2 minutes. Film Trailers show bits and pieces of the film that is going to be released, The most interesting pieces are to be used to attract the most attention. Besides being shown on just Television, they are also shown in cinema's before screening of films and on the Internet. The Internet is now the best place to watch film trailers for everyone. Around 10 billion Film trailers are watched annually on the Internet. In popularity of world wide ranking of popularity on the Internet, they rank #3 in the world.

What is a Teaser Trailer?...
A teaser trailer is a short clip of an upcoming film, game or television series. They are typically within 30 - 60 seconds of footage. which is almost half of a film trailer. In the case of films, they are often released almost half a year before the film is even released. This is done to build anticipation among audiences and fans. Also, Little footage has often been recorded at this point in time and the filming has not been complete. This is where the film trailer leads in after, because film trailers are longer therefore containing more footage of the film because of the closeness of the time of the trailer from the film. Typically Teaser trailers are often made for Big-budgeted or highly anticipated films. Also like film trailers, Teaser trailers are very popular on the Internet.

To conclude, A film Trailer is a extended version which has more detail and footage of the upcoming film. While the teaser trailer has less footage and less detail. The teaser trailer is used to build hype and anticipation and the Film trailer is to inform more of the nearby release date and to also build hype.

Now that I have extinguished the differences between teaser trailers and film trailers, I will now analyse and comment on the codes, conventions, angles and ideologies presented in them. This will help with my production of a film trailer.

Comedy Trailer Analysis ~ Film Trailer
~ The Invention Of Lying.

This is a Film Trailer of a recent film of Ricky Gervais's about the 'invention of lying'. (2009). The film was originally going to be called 'This Side Of The Truth', but Ricky Gervais had announced on his Blog that the name was going to be changed. The film is set in another dimension almost, in which no one has ever lies. It stars Ricky Gervais who also directed the film along side Matthew Robinson. The film Stars Ricky Gervais who is a writer who tells the first lie and discovers that he can use it for personal gain and advantage. The film also stars actors such as Jennifer Garner who seems to be a rather big part of the story line because she is displayed
on the poster for the film.

M.I.G.R.A.I.N Model..

M - Film Trailer is used to communicate to the audience that this is a film that is going to be released soon.
I -
The ideology behind this trailer is about the truth and lying. It solely seems to be about how lying is used to manipulate situations and the people in the surrounding are not used to 'lying' because this is not a part of their everyday lives, so therefore have no understanding.
G -
This Film Trailer displays that there is some form of 'comedy' so we must presume that the film in the future is going to be humorous and labelled in the genre of 'Comedy'.
R -
The representation displays comedy and makes jokes. The storyline is clear but is told in a matter of minutes, The whole of the story is not told because then there would be no point in watching the film to see the results of the man's actions.
A -
The audience seems to be in the Young Adult and Adult range. When first played, you can see that the viewer is cautioned about the suggested age restrictions applied to the trailer and the film ''PG-13, PARENTS STRONGLY CAUTIONED, SOME MATERIAL MAY BE INAPPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 13, LANGUAGE INCLUDING SOME SEXUAL MATERIAL AND A DRUG REFERENCE'' This is a warning to the viewer.
I -
At the beginning of the Film Trailer 3 companies are noted and shown at 00:08. These are Warner Bros, Radar Pictures, Media Rights Capital, Because they were displayed they were obviously involved in the production and distribution of the movie.
N -
The narrative is clearly displayed throughout the Film Trailer, You learn that the person is not very popular and has not got a very good life but soon he learns about lying and uses it to his advantage and he runs in to a few problems and then the trailer leaves you hanging with questions in mind building anticipation and hype for you. This will then make you want to watch the film in the cinema or when it is released on DVD.

Print Screen & analysis...
(All print screened images can be enlarged by clicking on them.)

This is the beginning of the trailer. Age Restrictions have been shown to inform the viewer of any restrictions. The beginning of the trailer also confirms that the trailer and film have been certified.

After the certification has been shown, the Film Trailer shows companies that have been involved in the produce and distribution and creation of the film. Warner Bros. Which is a big name in the film industry is stated. Two other companies known by the name of Media Rights Capitals and Radar Pictures. This is also a form of advertisement for them for any directors or producers that are interested in working with them because they may have enjoyed their previous work. This screen-shot displays the fact that credits of the companies involved in the film are always shown film.

This is the first scene that we see. The male character is knocking on this ladies door for the date that they had set up. The door could resemble its way of welcoming the audience in to the film. The trailer starts with a mid-shot, by making a good amount of impact without being in the face of the audience. Hence why they did not use a close-up shot.

In this print screen not long after the previous one, I believe it establishes the film's genre which is comedy. You see the male character that is dressed up walking past someone that is homeless. The homeless person is holding up a sign saying ''I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I'M HOMELESS AND YOU ARE NOT''. To me I found this humorous and established the fact that this film was a film of the comedy genre. It is also a Mid-shot because of the necessity to establish that the person on the floor is homeless, The clothes he is wearing help establish this fact and the fact that he is sitting next to the bins. The mid shot is also incorporated in to using the background, This gives more evidence to the fact that the person on the floor is homeless because it is in the middle of the street. The Dressed up male character is walking in the street minding his own business until the homeless guy shows his sign, The dressed up character gives expressions of confusion and a look that seems funny.

Voice over to go along with writing. This screen shot shows that 'THE TRUTH'' is an important part of the film and has something to do with the film trailer and the following scene or previous scene.

A long shot to establish the scene, and you can also see the main from the previous shot which established the genre of the film. It is clear now that he is the main character of the film.

Over the shoulder shot is used to establish that these two people are having a conversation in a bank.

Close up shot is shot. During this short scene it also zooms in to his face. which gives some confusion to the viewer but it also shows that the character is in shock and has realised something that he can use to his potential. The expression displays this fact.

Close up is used again. we can still see bits of both characters and we can see the exchange of money.

The character shows a happy expression and in this scene he realises he can use lying to his advantage. The hands put together and lower lighting might imply that the character is scheming.

A long and wide shot is used to show that there are two characters sitting in the park and there are no people around, The space between the characters also implies that their is almost no kind of relationship between them and some sort of awkwardness.

A conversation is occuring between these two characters, the setting that they are in establish that they are in bed at their own houses. Through out this short clip everytime they are speaking it cuts back to that character, this then shows that they are both having a conversation.

A mid shot is used in the screen shot, they are also dressed up which may imply that they are on a date, night out or around one another's house. They are both facing each other which once again establishes they are having a conversation.

This screen shot shows that the film is about lying and the truth.
The writing is in the centre with no distractions so the viewers attention is dragged to the biggest and most important thing in the screen.

The cast is rolling down to drag any fans in. The main characters are listed. The writing is in the centre with no distractions so the viewers attention is dragged to the biggest and most important thing in the screen.

The name of the film is estbalished.
The writing is in the centre with no distractions so the viewers attention is dragged to the biggest and most important thing in the screen.

The release season is stated but not the specific dates. so this may be a earlier film trailer. The writing is in the centre with no distractions so the viewers attention is dragged to the biggest and most important thing in the screen.

Print Screen & analysis...
(All print screened images can be enlarged by clicking on them.)

This is the beginning of the trailer. Age Restrictions have been shown to inform the viewer of any restrictions. The beginning of the trailer also confirms that the trailer and film have been certified.

This introduces the corporation that is involved in the produce of this commodity. 20th Century Fox, is a large corporation that is involved in a large range of media.

The end of the introduction of the corporation, it is stated what type of corporation it is at the bottom part of the picture. The chipmunks are there because it is introducing the film, they are singing the noticeable theme tune that fox has applied to this introduction.

The words ' THEY'RE BACK ' Implies that they have been around before, this trailer is a sequel to a prior movie involving the majority of the same characters.

The main characters are introduced, obviously the prior image is relating to these chipmunks, who were also previously seen in the trailer when seeing the introduction of the corporate logo.

The themed colouring makes a return. The words 'BUT THEY'RE NOT ALONE' implies that that there is something new and they are not alone meaning that new characters are going to be introduced.

The new characters are now introduced, you can see that they are looking at the chipmunks with a cheerful expression, The lighting is clear and seems as if it was natural daylight. The shot used is a wide shot.

This close up is of the main chipmunk showing his expression when he sees the female chipmunks, after this you see the other chipmunks expression.

You once again see a close up of a chipmunk, this is a clever technique used in flipping forth and back between each of the characters expressions from seeing one another.

You know see the entire groups expression and appreciation of the new characters, through out the prior scene you hear romantic music which obviously implies some romance may occur.

You clearly see the name of the film, and the words 'SQUEAKQUEL' obviously it means sequel which once again implies that this is a following another film.

The date of release of the film has now been established.
The date of 'CHRISTMAS DAY' is unusual, because normally the majority of shops are closed, and it would be unlikely that anybody would go out on Christmas day to watch a film.

You also get to see the type of imagery that is portrayed for each of them. The one in the red is the leader, the blue one is portrayed in a geeky way, due to the fact that he is wearing glasses and arranging them on with one finger. The green one is short and looks sort of dopey. You already learn a bit about the characters within the first three seconds. At the end of the three seconds you see shocked expressions and they are all looking ahead.
